I love working with the Latinx community by helping them connect to health coverage programs and services. Growing up with immigrant parents and being an immigrant myself, we faced similar challenges that many members of our community face. Being part of the Washtenaw Health Project, I enjoy being able to help make a difference.

I originally chose to work at the Washtenaw Health Project to help coordinate care with and for medically complex people who had additional social and economic challenges. Today, in my position as a Lead Community Health Worker, I am also able to assist and advocate for providing access to other social determinants of health such as food, housing, transportation, and medical equipment. This access to care may improve someone’s overall livelihood.

One of the main reasons I like working at the Washtenaw Health Project is that I was also in a similar position as our clients when I moved to Michigan, and I want to give back to the community.

I believe that everyone should be able to see a doctor when they need it, regardless of their income, race, or language spoken. No one should have to chose between taking care of their health, putting food on the table, and paying rent. At the Washtenaw Health Project, we simplify the often confusing process of health insurance to make sure that anyone who wants healthcare coverage can get healthcare coverage. I love that everyone here goes above and beyond—we don’t just make sure our clients have health insurance, but we also make sure they are able to use it. We help people feel calm through our in-depth knowledge of health insurance and our humanizing presence when they most need it.

I joined the Washtenaw Health Project because of the people who work here. Our staff make healthcare approachable and less intimidating; they are friendly and determined to connect people with the care they need. Each of us wants to be a part of putting the power of healthcare in our clients’ hands.

I am a person who has a family history of helping people. My grandmother was a foster parent to over 150 children. My mother was a case worker for DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services). My aunt owns a company that assists people who are developmentally disabled. Washtenaw Health Project allows me to do what comes naturally to me, and that’s to help people.

Being raised in a first-generation Mexican-American household, cultural representation in every space is very important to me. As a part of the Washtenaw Health Project, I’ve been given the opportunity to break down the bridges that exist within healthcare and access to community resources. We are a safe resource hub with a culturally diverse staff who speak multiple languages. I enjoy working for an organization where our community members can trust that we will find the best and most affordable healthcare services for them and their loved ones.

As a first-generation Mexican-American, I grew up seeing firsthand the obstacles my parents faced navigating everyday life in another country. I chose to be a part of Washtenaw Health Project to assist my community and break down the confusion that exists within accessing healthcare, beginning with language barriers. ¡Juntos lograremos obtener servicios de salud para una comunidad más saludable!
