Washtenaw Health Plan
Information for Members

When you enroll in the Washtenaw Health Plan, you will be assigned to a primary care clinic where you will receive medical care. You will receive a card with an Health Plan Management System (HPMS) number and a member handbook. (You can also find the member handbook below.)

Here are some answers to questions often asked by new members.

Where can I get medical care?

PRIMARY CARE CLINIC

During enrollment you are assigned a Primary Care Clinic where you will receive medical care. It is important to get care from your Primary Care Clinic. Seeking care at any non-participating or out-of-county clinics will result in bills that will not be covered by the Washtenaw Health Plan. In those cases, you would have to find financial assistance or charity care through the out of county clinic or hospital.

SPECIALTY CARE

Washtenaw Health Plan covers specialists that are approved by your Primary Care Clinic. For this reason, see your Primary Care Clinic first, and they will refer you to a specialist.

URGENT CARE

Washtenaw Health Plan partners with five Washtenaw County IHA urgent care centers. These are the ONLY urgent cares that participate with the Washtenaw Health Plan. (There are many other urgent cares in Washtenaw County, but none of them accept the Washtenaw Health Plan.)

  • Trinity Health IHA Urgent Care – West Arbor
  • Trinity Health IHA Urgent Care – EMU
  • Trinity Health IHA Urgent Care – Saline
  • Trinity Health IHA Urgent Care – Milan
  • Trinity Health IHA Urgent Care – Domino Farms

EMERGENCY CARE

Washtenaw Health Plan covers emergency care at:

  • Trinity Health Emergency – Ann Arbor Hospital (formerly St. Joe’s)
    5301 McAuley Dr.
    Ypsilanti, 48197
  • Chelsea Hospital Emergency
    775 S Main St
    Chelsea, Michigan 48118
  • University of Michigan Hospital Emergency Room
    1500 E Medical Center Dr
    Ann Arbor, MI 48109

No one can be turned away by emergency rooms, even if they don’t have active insurance.

How do I make an appointment?

To make an appointment, call your Primary Care Clinic (listed on your Washtenaw Health Plan member card) and schedule an appointment. If you need to see a specialist, your doctor at the clinic will refer you to a specialist.

I have an unpaid bill. Who do I call?

You can call the number on the back of your card to see if the bill is being processed. If there are problems with billing, please contact the Washtenaw Health Project at 734-544-3030 or wph@washtenaw.org.

How can I find out if a service is covered?

Call the number on the back of your card and ask if a service is covered.

Where can I get a vaccine?

Many vaccines are available at pharmacies. You must show your Washtenaw Health Plan member ID.  Your doctor may also be able to vaccinate at an appointment or in their office. If the vaccine is not covered, please visit the Washtenaw County Health Department. Washtenaw Health Project staff can assist with this process.
