IRS Free Filing Online
Each year the IRS partners with online tax preparation services to offer free federal filing for people with annual income below a certain amount. This amount changes year to year. This is called the IRS Free File.
If your adjusted gross income (AGI) for 2025 was $89,000 or less, you can file your federal return online for free with one of the IRS’ filing partners. Pick the one that works best for you on the IRS Free File page.
Michigan Law Low Income Tax Payer Clinic
Does the IRS think you owe more than you do? Or that you should pay more than you can afford?
Michigan Law’s Low Income Tax Payer Clinic provides low-income people with representation (by law students supervised by a tax attorney) to achieve a correct outcome in an IRS dispute, regardless of the taxpayer’s ability to pay for representation. This clinic is not for preparing or filing taxes.
To contact them for possible representation, complete their online application or call 734-936-3535.
American Immigration Council ITIN Fact Sheet
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a 9-digit number from the IRS. It is for people who need to file U.S. taxes but cannot get a Social Security number (SSN).
Many immigrants use an ITIN to file their taxes. Filing taxes can help you:
-
Follow U.S. tax laws
-
Show proof of income
-
Apply for some tax credits
-
Keep your records up to date
An ITIN is only for taxes. It does not:
-
Give you work permission
-
Change your immigration status
-
Provide Social Security benefits
Questions about health insurance and taxes
Why do I need to file taxes if I have Marketplace / HealthCare.gov insurance?
If you received help paying for your health insurance in the form of Advanced Premium Tax Credits (APTCs), you must file a federal tax return and reconcile your tax credits. This is to make sure that the amount of tax credits you received from the government was correct. You must do this each year to keep that help.
What form do I need?
You will need Form 1095-A. The Health Insurance Marketplace mails this to you in mid- January to mid-February. You can also access it online in your HealthCare.gov account.
What happens when I file?
You or the person preparing your taxes will use the amounts on Form 1095-A to complete Form 8962.
The IRS then checks if you received the right amount of health insurance savings based on your income for that year.
What if I received too much help?
You may need to pay some of it back when you file.
What if I received too little help?
You may get money back when you file.
What happens if I don't file my taxes?
If you don’t file your taxes and you don’t reconcile your health insurance advanced premium tax credits, you may not qualify for this help again in the future.
